In memoriam – Donald Roelofs

Roelofs, Donald H 1/22/1932 – 2/26/2017 Husband of Millie Muskegon Mr. Donald H. Roelofs, age 85, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2017.

He was born in Muskegon, Michigan on January 22, 1932 to Jack & Sue (La France) Roelofs and was a life-long resident of the area. Mr. Roelofs served in the US Army and was a member of the elite Sixth Army Band located at the Presidio in San Francisco. He earned degrees from Michigan State University and Western Michigan University. Mr. Roelofs was employed by the Muskegon Public Schools as a music teacher and administrator. He was a former member of the West Shore Symphony and the Cosmopolitan Male Singers. Mr. Roelofs devoted many years to the music ministry at Church of the Open Door and Berean Church. He also served the Muskegon Rescue Mission as a board member and Director of Development.

For many years he served as a faithful caregiver to three elderly individuals. Don enjoyed a full and meaningful life. He was devoted to his wife, family and church. He was also a life-long fan of the Muskegon Big Reds and the MSU Spartans. SURVIVORS Wife of 59 years, Millie; children, Kim Lea (Jonathan) English of Brentwood CA, Fae Lin (David) Diepstra of Grand Rapids, Amy Lou (Brian) Barber of Howell and foster daughter, Sac (Thanh Dinh) Huynh of Grand Rapids; grandchildren, Benjamin, Nathan, Ryan, Jessica, Timothy, Emily, Grace, Katherine, Thanh Thai; great grandchildren, Harper, Ben, Felix, Nora, Olive, Louis & Eivin; sister, Norma (Robert) Slayback of Lodi CA; brothers, William “Bil” Roelofs of Nobelsville IN, Raymond (Gertrude) Roelofs of Sacramento CA; step sisters, Karen Kolberg of TX, Lois (Bill) Mieras of Spring Lake; sisters-in-law, Shirley Vanderstelt of Muskegon, Ruth Vanderstelt of Grand Rapids; many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Jacqueline Roelofs, Maxine Sheffield and sister-in-law, Marian Roelofs; brothers-in-law, Kenneth & Clifford Vanderstelt.
